Criminal matters in Buriram
From a police complaint at the local station to trial in the provincial court, here is how the criminal process works in Buriram.
The sequence
- Police stage: complaint or arrest at the local station; you have the right to know the charge, contact a lawyer and a relative, and to an interpreter. Sign nothing you cannot read.
- Bail: routinely granted for most offences against security (cash, bank guarantee or a land deed); a lawyer speeds this up materially.
- Prosecutor decides on indictment; alleged victims can also bring private criminal cases directly to court.
- Trial at the Buriram Provincial Court before career judges; guilty pleas typically earn large sentence reductions.
- Appeal within short deadlines to the Court of Appeal Region 3 (seated in Nakhon Ratchasima).
Charges that catch people out
- Criminal defamation — including Facebook posts and reviews — often charged with the Computer Crime Act.
- Gambling — most forms are illegal, including the card games at village funerals that occasionally end in mass arrests.
- Drugs — severe penalties persist; cannabis rules keep shifting, so check the current status rather than assuming.
- Weapons — unlicensed firearms are a serious matter, including inherited guns never re-registered.
If someone is detained
Move fast: engage a licensed criminal lawyer, prepare bail security, and — for foreigners — inform the embassy. Early days shape the whole case.
